Riding Lessons

"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man."

Winston Churchill

"No one can teach riding as well as a horse."

 CS Lewis

Riding lessons at New Beginnings Farm consist of sharing Meredith's horses, and her knowledge of them, to bring pleasure and joy into another's life.

New Beginnings Farm offers a safe environment for the novice rider to learn basic horsemanship skills and the principles of riding on the flat (no jumping).

All riding is done with a snaffle bit. Students may choose an English or western saddle.

Safety is our first priority - fun is expected!

Lessons are taught in a fenced in 20 X 40 meter arena. As the student progresses there may be opportunities to ride outside of the arena (trail ride).

Each lesson begins with the student assisting in grooming and saddling the horse (tacking up). The student then leads the horse to the arena, mounts, and receives their riding lesson. After riding, the student helps with the necessary tasks of putting their horse back in their pasture.

The frequency of lessons depends on you. Of course the more you ride the more you will progress. A minimum of once a week is highly encouraged.

No climbing gates or fence

No open toe shoes around horses

Do not feed horses without supervision

Appropriate Riding Attire

ASTM/SEI approved helmet (one may be borrowed initially).

Long pants to protect legs (jeans, tights, breaches, etc.).

Shoes with a hard sole and low heel (NO tennis shoes, large hiking boots or "chunky" heels).

No baggy pants or baggy shirts.

No large or loose jewelry.

New Beginnings Farm requires all riders to wear an ASTM/SEI approved riding helmet. An investment in an approved helmet is cheap insurance for your head.

Helmet Fit:

A helmet must fit properly to be protective. The helmet should fit securely on the head covering the top of the forehead. You should be able to shake your head vigorously up and down and not dislodge the helmet. If the helmet slides, then it is too big. Padding may help the fit. Remember to check your fit often.
